Shaynna Blaze’s simple tips to glam up your home

For those starting their own DIY home projects, Shaynna Blaze has revealed her top tips to change your home, without going crazy and ending up out of pocket.

House prices will see 'double digit falls' across all major cities

Award-winning interior designer Shaynna Blaze gone back to basics during her pandemic downtime, getting her hands dirty in the garden.

For Blaze, from Foxtel’s Selling Houses Australia, the lockdown has given her time to declutter and organise her home as well as try out some handy gardening hacks.

“Because I do my celery juice, I found a little project where you can actually regenerate your celery by putting them into water and eventually into the garden — so that’s a bit exciting,” she told News Corp.

Despite being an interiors whiz, Blaze said she hadn’t been focusing on any interior projects, but instead was working on decluttering and sorting out cupboards and wardrobes.

“I haven’t been really doing many interior projects at the moment because it’s sort of at a stage where it needs a massive overhaul,” she said.

“I’m thinking I might just wait till it’s all over and then think about it then rather than doing a little bits and pieces.”

For those looking to start their own DIY projects, Blaze said it was important to “focus on one room at a time, rather than going crazy”.

“I’d tell people to focus on their bedroom.

“I think, especially with peelable wallpaper, why don’t you just get creative and do something amazing?

“Turn your bedroom into a jungle of plants with big ferns and palms in your peelable wallpaper, then you can put lots of indoor plants in there as well and change your bed linen.”

“Just really rejuvenate the space that you spend a lot of time in.”

Blaze said anyone looking to do more involved DIY projects, like renovating their kitchen or bathroom should first start with a solid plan, timeline and budget before figuring out what they need tradespeople for and what they can do themselves.

“If you want to do some projects, really look at the functionality of your kitchen,” she said.

“We may have cleaned out all the cupboards and everything, but does it work for you?”

Simple things like changing cupboard handles, and installing a new splashback could give the space a “great lift”, says Blaze.

Laundry renovations are also a hot new trend, according to Blaze, who said a lot of people were deciding whether to integrate it into their kitchen.

“I would look at those functional spaces that you could pull apart and redo,” she said.

“Really rethink your laundry, where it is and whether you can adjust to having things other than a laundry,” she said.

“You could do more storage in there, you could do a partial pantry in there.”
