Music alternatives for kids during home isolation

If you’re getting over listening to The Wiggles and Justine Clarke then it’s time to diversify the musical tastes of your mini rockers.

We all love The Wiggles. And Justine Clarke, and all the go-to children’s music makers who have kept kids entertained and parents slightly insane for decades.

For parents keen to diversify the musical tastes of their mini rockers and folkers, here are some alternatives.

BUNNY RACKET

Easter bunnies look out! Hop into punk rock heaven with King Bunny aka Andy Walker who has enlisted legends including Brant Bjork (Kyuss, Fumanchu) and The Doors’ shredder Robby Krieger, on his Rock’n’Roll Animals.

Only 500 vinyl copies were originally released but you can now get it as a digital album featuring such rockin’ tunes as A Chicken Is Not A Fruit and Never Shake A Rattlesnake. Check out the free vids on YouTube, then enjoy the album on Spotify.

BIG KIDS

A new project featuring Parissa Tosif of Vallis Alps, Lachlan Bostock of Mansionair, Sean Walker and Naysan Rowhani who get seriously wacky and contemporary with their Dance Party EP.

These fun tunes come with a warning – The Pizza Song is destined to become the new Baby Shark because you will not be able to boot the “eat the pizza” chant out of your head. On all streaming platforms.

THE VEGETABLE PLOT

On a mission of “love and peas” The Vegetable Plot is hipster Wiggles, bringing together an eclectic bunch of indie musicians led by Luke Escombe (Aspara Gus) rocking out on rootsy (wait for it) songs about eating more veg.

Their second album Season Two features guests including Canadian singer-songwriter Brian Campeau as French Onion, and Georgia Mooney (All Our Exes Live In Texas) as Collie Flower.

THE TEENY TINY STEVIES

The ARIA Awards-nominated side hustle of The Little Stevies folk duo Byll and Beth Stephen has been kicking around for five years.

They have just released Good For Your Health, uncannily written and recorded months ahead of the vigorous handwashing routine ushered in by COVID-19.

REGURGITATOR’S POGOGO SHOW

This. Is. The. Best. The delightful silliness of the Australian rockers is turned up to 11 on their album The Really Really Really Really Boring Album, recorded using children’s guitars and drums.

These songs will get kids and parents rocking and giggling hysterically as you shout/sing along to I Don’t Wanna Dog, Pigeon Riding On A Motorcycle and Farting Is A Part Of Life.

JOHNNY CASH CHILDREN’S ALBUM

Here’s a throwback 70s record you probably didn’t know existed.

Reissued in 2006, the record features Cash’s signature warm gruff voice to classics including Old Shep and My Grandfather’s Clock alongside his own compositions.
