Golf and tennis clubs told to keep toilets shut despite being allowed to reopen

Melbourne golfers will have to hold it in after courses reopened but clubs were told to keep their toilets shut, sparking a fierce backlash.

Toilets must remain shut at Melbourne golf and tennis clubs despite the government allowing them to welcome guests back on Wednesday.

The restrictive rule states that while tennis courts and golf tees can open back up, the indoor parts of the clubs must be shut – including toilets.

Golf Australia sent a memo to its members on Wednesday evening saying that was “different from previous advice” and that it would “make urgent representations to government on this point as we understand full well this is a significant impost”.

Golf Australia also understands that golf carts are only meant to be used by one person unless they live in the same household.

Royal Melbourne Golf Club captain Andrew Kirby said it was a “joke” and a “breach of human rights”.

“I know the blokes can do a number one in the trees but there are lots of women playing,” Mr Kirby said.

“Golf courses have really gone out of their way to embrace Covid-safe, scores are done on an app, you don’t touch anything, we’re vaccinated only, so we’re trying to work with it and make it safer.”

He hoped “things will prevail today but this is Victoria”.
