CALL it gonzo journalism at its best.

CNN reporter Randi Kaye took to the streets of Colorado to find out first hand how the state was coping with legal marijuana sales which came into effect on January 1.

Only it seems she might have spent a little too much time with a couple smoking joints the "size of cannons" before going live on air.

"How extensive was your research?" CNN anchor Anderson Cooper asked from back in the studio.

"It was top notch. We did very extensive research I have to tell you. My brain was a little fuzzy by the time I got out of there," Ms Kaye replied.

"I wasn't thinking right. I couldn't remember even some of the questions I wanted to ask in the interview which has never happened to me when I'm reporting in the field and I found things to be really funny. Much funnier than I normally do so I think we got a little bit of a contact high," she said.

"But it was just a contact high. I just want to make that clear. Is that correct?" Cooper joked.

"Yes it was a just a contact high," she confirmed.

Her piece was filed as part of a "Gone to Pot" series looking at how the state was coping with legal sales of the drug.

It has spawned a burgeoning industry of "ganjaprenuers" including a booming tourism business that takes in different varieties of the local crop, much the same way people might tour wineries in California's Napa Valley.

The report finishes with an elaborate explanation of different types of marijuana sold, while Cooper asks her if the joints were really the size of "cannons".

"They were so big nobody wanted to light it," Ms Kaye said. "Everybody was afraid to touch it."

"I think you need to come back to the East Coast," Cooper said.
