Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Premier Daniel Andrews had an awkward exchange at a Remembrance Day service after publicly criticising each other over the past 18 months.

Melbourne marks Remembrance Day with Prime Minister in attendance

Scott Morrison and Dan Andrews have put their differences aside and joined together to mark Remembrance Day in Melbourne on Thursday.

The pair were snapped chatting prior to the service at the Shrine of Remembrance as pictures raised suspicions relations between the two were at an all time low.

While the two leaders have struggled to see eye-to-eye over the course of the pandemic, a source close to the prime minister assured the NCA Newswire the brief meeting was nothing but cordial.

They said the pair got on well and the Prime Minister – despite pictures that suggest otherwise – was happy to see him.

On what the two discussed, the source said the Prime Minister would not reveal his discussions with the Premier but it was “respectful”.

Mr Morrison did not address the crowd at the Shrine of Remembrance but he did lay a wreath at the steps of the shrine as part of the commemoration.

Earlier, Mr Morrison dished up plates of sausages, bacon and scrambled eggs to veterans at the Doncaster RSL club in Melbourne's northeast on Thursday morning.

Addressing the room, Mr Morrison honoured the current serving and former defence force personnel for all they have done for the nation.

“We are all here, because they gave their today so we could have this tomorrow, and that is something we will be forever grateful for,” he said.

“Remembrance Day is a day to honour, in this room, the veterans who have served in Vietnam and East Timor, in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“It doesn’t matter which battle, which conflict, it’s the same uniform that has been worn. It is the same honour that is being lived up to and shown as you’ve stepped up in our name.

“We are safer today because of your efforts and we are free today because of your efforts, and we are deeply thankful.”
