Meanwhile, the number of job ads on SEEK increased in some states and territories but not all.

SEEK ANZ managing director Kendra Banks said 2019 was off to a steady start.

“We continue to maintain steady and consistent growth for new job ads and advertised salaries,” she said.

“When we look at the diverse range of industries, it comes as no surprise that the mining

sector still continues to dominate the employment market. However, it is interesting to see

the increased demand in job roles for the public sector, particularly for government and

defence candidates.”

Tasmania led job ad growth between January 2018 and January 2019, increasing by 18.9 per cent – followed by WA (5.3 per cent), ACT (2.8 per cent) and Victoria (1.7 per cent).

The rest of the country recorded declining job ads, including NT (-9.5 per cent), SA (-2.6 per cent), NSW (-1.1 per cent) and QLD (-0.2 per cent).

Nationally, SEEK job ads grew by 0.6 per cent year on year.

“Tasmania has been consistently outperforming the mainland in jobs advertised since 2014,” Ms Banks said.

“The growth in Tasmania can be attributed to tourism and the interest in MONA (Museum of Old and New Art), the growing dairy industry and, more recently, population growth.”
