WORKERS who care for babies and new mums and those who build us places to live and work had the top jobs advertised on SEEK this year.
Based on the largest job ad volumes and growth in the past 12 months, midwives and neonatal nurses (up 50 per cent) along with project engineers (55 per cent) were at the top of the list.
Strong growth also was recorded in caring roles in emergency services, with 42 per cent more ambulance paramedics jobs advertised.
SEEK spokeswoman Kendra Banks said the nation’s growing population and increasing life expectancy could be credited for fuelling jobs growth across engineering, emergency services, medical, health and nursing roles.
“We don’t expect demand on SEEK to slow any time soon across these top jobs of 2016, as Australians will always need new and/or improved infrastructure and people to care for us at all stages of life,” she said.
“Engineering directly supports Australia’s future infrastructure growth, so it’s not surprising our SEEK data revealed engineering roles as top jobs.
“These professionals are fundamental to help build residential and commercial projects to cater for our increasing population.
“Emergency service specialists and ambulance paramedics are vital services that have been and we predict will remain top jobs on SEEK as Australians live longer and our population continues to increase.”
She said jobs for clinical/medical researchers would remain strong because their services were essential for enhancing the wellbeing of Australian lives through medical advancements.
“As birthrates increase across Australia, we predict specialised neonatal nursing jobs will show continued ad growth on SEEK,” Ms Banks said.
The industry which recorded the biggest growth in job ads was ICT, up 5 per cent.
Nationally, job advertisements in November were up 6 per cent compared to the same month last year.
South Australia again had the highest year-on-year advertising growth, up 16 per cent, followed by Victoria, (up 12.7 per cent), ACT (up 10.6 per cent), Tasmania (up 8.3 per cent), NT (up 8.2 per cent), New South Wales (up 6.9 per cent) and Queensland (up 4 per cent).
In Victoria, the healthcare and medical sector had a 24 per cent increase in job ads year-on-year in November.
While job advertisements were not as buoyant in Western Australia and Queensland as the other states and territories, Ms Banks said it appeared the decline in advertising associated with the mining downturn had finally stabilised and was now showing tentative signs of improvement.
In WA, job ads were down 11.2 per cent this November compared to last, however, were up 0.5 per cent on October (2016).
