The number of Aussies employed since Covid has ballooned by 1.5 million, fresh Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show

“Filled jobs rose by 257,100 in September quarter 2024, continuing the growth we’ve seen since Covid-19 Delta variant measures eased in December quarter 2021,” ABS head of labour statistics David Taylor said.

Overall, the number of filled jobs rose by 1.6 per cent in the September quarter to 16 million.

The rally in jobs was broad based, with 15 of the 19 industries having more jobs filled in September, but public services jobs led the way.

The number of people working in healthcare and social assistance grew by 109,700, while professional scientific and technical services added 30,6000 jobs.

These rises were partially offset by a fall in the remaining four industries, including administrative and support services, which shed 26,100 jobs.

“Healthcare and social assistance continued to be a key driver of labour market strength, with 4.3 per cent growth in filled jobs this quarter and 11.4 per cent annually,” Mr Taylor said.

“This takes the total number of filled jobs in the industry to 2.6 million.”

Not only are more Aussies working, they are also working harder, with hours worked growing 0.8 per cent in the September quarter 2024; however, this is starting to slow.

“Between December quarter 2021 and June quarter 2023, we saw strong growth in hours worked of 10.3 per cent compared to filled jobs at 6.6 per cent,” Mr Taylor said.

“Since June quarter 2023, quarterly hours worked has softened and we’re starting to see a more consistent relationship with other labour market measures like filled jobs and employment, as noted in recent labour force survey data.”

Nearly one million Aussies, or 6.6 per cent of the working-age population, above the long-term average of between 5 to 6 per cent, are working in two jobs, according to the ABS.

There are now 986,400 people in multiple jobs compared with 13.5 million single job holders.

Women outranked men by nearly 2 per cent when it came to multiple jobs, while younger Aussies aged between 20 to 24 were the most likely to be working multiple gigs based on age demographics.

Community and personal service workers were most likely to have another job, with just more than 10 per cent of them working for more than one employer.
