‘Above simply automating’: Major company to roll out AI-powered HR personas

A major global company has created digital personas which can hire and offboard employees and monitor where you work from.

A major global HR and payroll company has announced its plans to release AI personas for hiring, firing and leave approvals.

American company Deel announced on Tuesday it plans to roll out the tools in more than 150 countries including Australia, allowing HR managers to deploy “specialised AI agents” within their companies for specific tasks.

These include a talent acquisition agent to automate elements of hiring, “The PTO Fairy” which automatically analyses requests for time off and “The Offboarder” to recommend steps for “a smooth and compliant” end of employment.

Other AI personas set to be included are an IT worker, a payroll analyser, a scheduling agent to fill gaps and a “Border Buddy” which checks the location employees are working from against their local tax rules.

Deel APAC general manager Mark Samlal said the agents work with professionals, as “humans define the inputs, review the outputs and decide on the final action”.

Mr Samlal said this ensures AI agents are “accountable for the people they support, and that human judgment remains at the centre of every critical decision”.

“This approach allows a supervised AI to take on repetitive, operational work while keeping strategic and sensitive calls firmly in human hands.”

Government research released in June found an increasing number of Australian small and medium businesses are adopting AI, with generative AI assistants the top used application.

The research found a growing recognition of the technology’s potential benefits among these businesses with 40 per cent adopting or intending to implement AI in the coming year.

Deel chief executive and co-founder Alex Bouaziz said the tools are useful for “going above simply automating tasks”.

“It’s about baking AI into already used and loved technology to remove the barriers that slow teams down,” he said.

“This will allow human creativity, ideas, talent, and opportunities to move as freely as the businesses they power.”

The AI agents are trained on the knowledge of more than 2000 experts according to Deel, and are compliant with local laws for more than 150 countries. Software users will also be able to build their own custom personas.

The product announcement comes as politicians, unions and business leaders meet in Canberra for the government’s Economic Reform Roundtable set to discuss the role of AI in the economy.

Opining for news.com.au, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Treasurer Jim Chalmers said they want to ensure “AI is a creator of good jobs, not a threat to them”.

“We want to make sure Australian workers and Australian business have the skills and safeguards to get the best out of new technology, including AI,” they wrote.
