Coles to roll out conveyor belt self serve check-outs

Coles has given a glimpse into the future of supermarket shopping fixing a long-held gripe of self service check-outs.

The supermarket shop is being transformed as Coles pushes ahead with the roll out of a new breed of hi-tech check-outs.

The supermarket giant says self-service check-outs with a conveyor belt, making it far easier to unpack a trolley loaded with groceries, are the way of the future.

Coles introduced the new look machines into another two Sydney stores this week while more than a dozen stores in Melbourne already contain the technology.

Coles profit protection and service general manager Sophie Wong said customer demand for self-checkout technologies had accelerated under Covid and the new style machines made the process quicker and easier.

“Our new self-service trolley check-outs have been installed in 53 stores nationally, including 18 supermarkets in Victoria, with more stores regularly added as part of our refurbishment program,” Ms Wong said.

“The new format combines two experiences that customers were already familiar with – belted lanes where customers are served by team members and our existing self-check-outs.

On the self-service trolley checkout, customers are able to scan their purchases more easily when they have a trolley or a bigger basket and pack their bags the way they like.

“Feedback has been extremely positive, as it provides customers with choice at the check-outs, and frees up space in the busy self-service checkout area.”

The check-outs contain enhanced anti theft technology while Coles is also working to do away with a shopping pain point – having to call for staff assistance when a “remove item from bagging area” notice flashes on the screen.

The supermarket giant first began trialing the rolling, self-service check-outs in 2015 but has ramped up their rollout over the past year.
