FORMER Hawk Steven Greene has built a near controlling stake in athleisure brand Jaggad, which he owns with Chris and Rebecca Judd.
The sports fashion brand has also attracted the attention of Melbourne-based entrepreneur Aimee Marks, who founded organic cotton tampon and nappy brand Tom Organic.
Company records show Mr Greene bought out a number of partners in Jaggad earlier this year.
These include stakes owned by former JB Hi-Fi owner Richard Bouris, who was part of a team that turned the electronics retailer into a national chain throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
It also included a stake from Melbourne-based fund manager Impact Investment Group and a Singaporean investment fund.
The transactions were completed in May this year.
Mr Greene is married to Mr Bouris’s daughter, Michelle.
Mr Greene’s private company has emerged with 1.44 million shares in Jaggad, which has about 3.5 million on issue, according to records lodged with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.
Chris Judd’s private company, Three Zebras, holds 660,000 shares while a company associated with Heath and Andrea Woodman accounts for 750,000 shares.
Mr Woodman is a partner in residential property developer Wolfdene, which is developing the Brompton at Cranbourne South and Pavilion at Casey Fields.
Mr Greene and Mr Judd were part of a group that bought the then niche triathlon brand Jaggad in 2013.
It has since been reinvented to cash in on growth in the athleisure market, amassing a dedicated following on Instagram with help from co-owner Bec Judd.
The TV presenter and model mum will launch a new range in Elwood tomorrow.
Jaggad has avoided opening dedicated retail outlets — it runs one store in Brighton — opting for a capital-light model by selling through third-party retailers including department store chain Myer and youth fashion chain Glue.
It has also expanded internationally, being sold in London, Thailand, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates.
The change in ownership structure comes as Jaggad works to raise its brand awareness in the massive US market.
It has also brought Ms Marks onto the share register.
A retail entrepreneur, Ms Marks founded Tom Organic in 2009 when she was still in high school after being frustrated by non-organic and inefficiently packaged tampons.
It has since broadened into maternity and baby product categories, launching Tooshies by Tom nappies in 2016.
The brand started by selling its products in health food stores and pharmacies in Melbourne but has since secured shelf space in both Woolworths and Coles.
Ms Marks received EY’s Emerging Female Entrepreneur Award in 2018.
Mr Greene, the son of three-time Hawthorn premiership player Russell Green, played 42 games for Hawthorn between 2001 and 2005.
