An Aussie who was trying to sell a pair of shoes for $50 has revealed that she got far more than she bargained for.
Ash Bradford, 23, took to social media to share the bizarre situation she found herself in after selling something on the Facebook Marketplace.
Ms Bradford said she sold a pair of shoes to a 14-year-old girl who came to her house to collect them with her dad.
Before they met, they agreed on $50, but when the father-daughter duo arrived, they haggled her down to $35.
Ms Bradford said the encounter was bizarre because, initially, she thought she wouldn’t be home when the teenager came to collect and asked her just to slide $50 under the doormat, but she ended up rocking up at 10:30pm at night with her dad.
“I get this knock on the door and they’re like ‘we’re not happy with the price they’re re too small’,” she explained
Ms Bradford said that, because it was 10.30pm at night, she wanted the interaction to be over and done with and settled for $35. She was then aghast when the dad handed her a $50 note and asked her for change.
“I am being robbed of my shoes right now,” she joked.
The 23-year-old found the whole encounter a bit random, but one of the many perils of selling things on Facebook is having awkward exchanges with strangers when they come to collect their item.
The saga didn’t end there, though, a few days later, the father returned without his daughter.
“Two days later, I got a knock at the door, and I opened the door. It was the same man, and he was like, ‘Do you remember me?’” she said.
“I’m like oh my God, what do you want now?”
Ms Bradford than shared, through laughter, that he “delivered” her a pizza with little explanation as to why.
“I went that is ‘very kind’ and now I’m sitting here eating my lamb pizza,” she said.
The 23-year-old told news.com.au that when she haggled down for her shoes, she felt “deflated” but figured she didn’t know anyone’s financial situation and that the shoes were going to a good home.
“That’s why I accepted the $35; it seemed like he was just trying to do something nice for his daughter, especially if the shoes were too small and he was still wanting them,” she explained.
Ms Bradford said she was completely “caught off guard” when he returned, uninvited to her home.
“It was the last thing I expected, and my housemates and I were in stitches. It was honestly one of the funniest moments we’ve witnessed,” she said.
“Although it was a very unsolicited arrival, he did mention that he worked at a pizza shop, so maybe this was just normal for him? A thank you pizza? An apology pizza? I’m not entirely sure, but it definitely didn’t seem malicious.
“The whole thing felt like a scene straight out of a movie.”
Despite Ms Bradford not being alarmed by the man returning to her house, the video blew up online and amassed 500,000 views.
Aussies were quick to express their concern, while others argued it was just a nice gesture.
“Why are you eating that?,” one questioned.
“Please be careful babe. This is a red flag,” another warned, but someone else chimed in and said the man’s behaviour was “sweet”, to which Ms Bradford agreed.
“Marketplace buyers are a different breed,” someone joked.
“He felt bad,” another argued.
“So Aussie! He felt bad about not paying a fair price, so he sorted it out,” someone else wrote.
