The ASX 200 finishes 0.2 per cent up at 7135.7 points.
On Wall Street, the S&P 500 closed 0.8 per cent lower, the technology-focused Nasdaq Composite index was off 1.5 per cent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.1 per cent weaker after strong retail sales data pushed the case for another big rate hike by the Federal Reserve.
US 10-year bond yields fell to 3.68 per cent, but two-year yields rose to 4.36 per cent.
Oil prices fell with the global benchmark Brent crude down 1.1 per cent to $US92.86 per barrel and the US Nymex off 1.5 per cent to $US85.59 per barrel.
The gold futures price was 0.1 per cent lower at $US1775.80 an ounce while iron ore futures rose by as much to $US92.34 a tonne.
