Boxing Day is one of the biggest days of the retail calendar as shoppers flock to stores to pick up a bargain.

In fact, this year’s Boxing Day is predicted to be one of the biggest ever according to National Retail Association CEO Dominique Lamb.

“The NRA forecasts that Aussie shoppers will splash more than $2.6 billion in cash nationwide, eclipsing all previous Boxing Day sales records,” she said.

NSW is on track for the biggest spend of $871 million – an increase of 6.1 per cent, followed by a 5.1 per cent increase in Victoria to $825 million.

Queenslanders will spend an estimated $420 million, while at the other end of the scale the ACT will spend $53 million and Northern Territory just $26 million.

However Ms Lamb was keen to note that spending across the board had risen for 2019.

“Boxing Day is one of the biggest days on the Australian shopping calendar, and retailers across the country are bracing themselves for a shopping blitz,” she said.

Ms Lamb said shoppers should research what times stores would be open and consider parking in the centres as it would be a busy day.

“Bargain prices can be found across retail brands of all shapes and sizes, but we also recommend that shoppers do their homework before embarking on the shops,” she said.

“The David Jones clearance is a genuine clearance, an event not to be missed with millions of genuine savings to be found in every store, on every floor, in every department with selected offers available in-store only and only on Boxing Day,” she said.

However, many retailers are not waiting till Boxing Day to bring on the sales with more than 30 brands dropping sales early.

Online retailers Amazon and eBay were first to open up the floodgates, with eBay announcing new deals daily, while Amazon already has its Boxing Day list that offers a variety of discounts online.

Aussies are expected to spend $530 million online this Boxing Day, according to the NRA.

Many of the brands that have already begun sales are offering the discounts across both their online and physical stores.
