NOW that's harsh.

Three workers from New Zealand fast-food chain Pita Pit found out they were suddenly out of a job after logging in to the company's private Facebook page to check their shifts.

Student Taryne Cullen, 20, had worked at the company for a year when she found her name missing from the roster. She sent a message to the Featherstone branch, Wellington, where she worked, only to be told "you don't have a job anymore," according to Stuff.

Brooke Adams, 19, was also given just 24 hours notice she had lost her job after working at the company for 20 months, while a third worker who had been at the company three years and didn't want to be named, was told to bring in her uniform because she didn't have a job anymore.

The brutal firings have sparked outrage online, with customers calling for a boycott of the shops.

"Boycott ALL Pita Pit shops until the franchise owners make the Featherston (sic) Street shop in Wellington apologise to the two workers fired on Facebook, gives them their jobs back, and compensates them for the crap way they have been treated," wrote customer Max Burke.

Pita Pit's head office said it had sent a representative to Wellington to "work through" the issues highlighted.

Owner of the branch in question Wayne Cui said he was new to running a business and accepted things could have been done better.

"If they want to talk to us, the door is always open," he told Stuff.
