Kansas City tourism poster with very unfortunate mistake becomes butt of jokes on Twitter

IT WAS the viral poster that had the whole world talking — and cringing. But there is more to the story than an embarrassing typo.

FOR two days, the world has been obsessed with a tourism sign with one glaring — and hilarious — mistake.

The poster was supposedly created by the Visit KC tourism body in Kansas City in the US, ahead of National Travel and Tourism Week.

It included the fateful words: “Did you know? Kansas City welcomes 25 million visitors anally.”

• AMP hit with class action

• Why this family farm sold for an incredible $200m

• The five-hour work day is here

The photo was shared on popular parody Twitter account You Had One Job, which collects examples of awkward typos and epic fails from all around the world.

It quickly went viral, becoming a global butt of jokes.

Sadly, Visit KC quickly poured cold water on the story, after revealing the photo had actually been forged to include the eye-catching typo.

“We can confirm that this photo is a fake. The advertisement it features has been doctored to show a misspelling where there is none”, the body tweeted in response to the controversy.

Others shared pictures of the real sign, in which the word “anally” is replaced by the family-friendly “annually”.

But while many You Had One Job followers appreciated the prank, others said they had been angered by the forgery, including Twitter user Eric Price who described the hoax as “disappointing”.

“That’s disappointing. Hey, @_youhadonejob1, I like your Twitter feed, but altering a pic to make it look like KC tourism messed up isn’t cool. Plus, the humour disappears if I suspect your pics are fake. Please consider removing this pic and not using fake ones anymore.”

But despite the backlash, social media users still jumped at the chance to share plenty of puns and jokes at poor Kansas City’s expense.
