Multiple Banana Boat sunscreens have been pulled from Australian shelves after a cancer-causing substance was detected in the products.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration issued the urgent recall on Thursday, warning unexpected levels of benzene were detected in four batches.
Benzene is a cancer-causing agent and has been linked to leukaemia.
Following the recall Banana Boat urged customers to stop using the products “out of an abundance of caution”.
But the company reassured customers that its other sun care products, including aerosols, were still safe to use.
The aerosol sunscreens have been sold at Woolworths and Coles, and pharmacies across Australia.
The three recalled sunscreens:
- Banana Boat Ultra Very High Protection Clear Sunscreen Spray SPF 50+
- Banana Boat Simply Protect Kids Very High Protection Sunscreen Lotion Spray SPF 50+
- Banana Boat Dry Balance Very High Protection Clear Sunscreen Spray SPF 50+.
Banana Boat provided a refund request form on its website.
All unsold products of the affected batches would be removed from shelves.
