One of the nation’s biggest banks has made an embarrassing blunder by sending thousands of home loan customers the wrong information about their accounts.

ANZ has today been forced to issue a grovelling apology to many borrowers after providing them with incorrect information about their loans.

ANZ sent about 45,000 customers a mortgage summary in the post and gave many incorrect details including how to get ahead of their loans quicker.

The blunder was discovered when it was too late and the letters had already been sent.

An urgent text message was sent by the bank on Monday afternoon to about 15,000 customers impacted by the misinformation.

“Recently you should have received a home loan summary letter in the mail from ANZ,” the message said.

“Unfortunately the summary is incomplete: it includes the variable component of your loan but not the fixed component.

“This means things like the loan balance and estimated equity are not correct.

“Please disregard the letter and do not rely on the information in it.

“We are sorry for the confusion.”

An ANZ spokesman said the information should have not been sent to customers with a split loan — both a variable and fixed component.

It should have only been sent to customers with a variable home loan.

An ANZ spokesman apologised for the error and conceded it was “unhelpful.”

“Last week we sent about 45,000 home loan customers a snapshot of how they are progressing with their home loan and included some tips for how they could get ahead by saving interest,” he said.

“About a third of those customers had split loans and we unfortunately did not include the fixed component in their snapshot so we sent them incomplete information.
