ALDI is looking for professionals from all sectors to apply for the role, even if they do not have any retail experience.

ALDI’s Victorian Store Operations Director Hariet Honore told News Corp Australia that applicants do not need retail experience because they can teach that.

Successful recruits go through to a 12-month training program where they show Area managers all of the parts of ALDI’s retail business.

This involves working in stores and learning the role of a Store Assistant right through to Store Manager, including stacking shelves and serving customers at the register.

Ms Honore said that ALDI is more interested in candidates who have leadership experience and the right “ALDI attitude”.

“Leadership skills are fundamental to the Area Manager role,” she said.

“We believe what you don’t know, you’ll learn. We can teach Area Managers about ALDI’s unique business model and all the things that make it successful.

“That’s why we don’t require retail experience and are less focused on background, and more on finding the right people with the right ‘ALDI Attitude.’”

But Ms Honore said the Area Manager position is not your average nine to five role.

“It’s a very diverse, autonomous role, where you need to rely on your ability to manage change and adapt to the fast pace of retail,” she said.

She said that the role offers a unique perk of five weeks of annual leave, as well as a fully expensed car and phone.

“The Area Manager position is a highly rewarding role, you get to run your stores as if they’re your own, lead a large number of people and make a real difference,” she said.

Ms Honore added that new recruits have opportunities for career development, including progression into other roles including those with ALDI overseas.

After they have completed their training, Area Managers will be assigned their own area and manage between 50 and 80 staff members, including Store Managers, Assistant Managers and Store Assistants. They are also responsible for recruitment in their assigned stores.

We are looking for determined, hardworking, motivated, positive and resilient Area Managers,” Ms Honore said.

“We’ve seen that these qualities combined with a passion for getting the best out of people are what make a candidate successful in the role.”
