MELBOURNE’S Southbank will once again be home to the southern hemisphere’s tallest building.
Australia 108 will stand at 319m — 25m higher than the Eureka Tower — have 1105 units and cost $1 billion to build.
The former Napthine Government gave the green light to the tower located at 70 Southbank Boulevard after initially approving a much higher version.
But the original 388m project designed by Eureka architects Fender Katsalidis had to be scaled back due to CBD flight controls.
Architect Karl Fender said once completed the building would be Australia’s most significant tower.
“It will capture the attention of people from around the world with its dramatic silhouette and its very unusual sculptural built form. It will add a new landmark, which will further enhance Melbourne’s profile as a leading centre of livability, culture and architecture,” Mr Fender said.
Singaporean developer World Class Land, a subsidiary of Aspial, will start construction in mid 2015.
Aspial chief executive Koh Wee Seng said: “Australia 108 will go where no development has gone before ... it will offer one of the world’s most luxurious lifestyles, the largest communal recreation facilities in Australia as well as world-class luxury apartment living.”
Facilities will include gymnasiums, private theatrettes, bars, club lounges, private dining areas and a golf simulator.
The 797 square metre penthouse is expected to sell for more than $20 million.
Apartments will go on sale in February with the building to be completed by 2019.
