A 35-year-old man drowned after getting into trouble swimming in the Murray River on Tuesday.

Emergency crews were called about 1pm to the stretch of water on the Victoria-New South Wales border.

Witnesses had seen the man enter the river but didn’t see him come back to shore.

The man had entered the water at Thompsons Beach near the town of Cobram on the Victoria side of the river that divides the state from NSW.

About 8.40pm, members of the Victorian Police Dive Unit located the 35-year-old man, submerged in four metres of water, and he was declared dead.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

The combination of a long weekend and hot weather has inspired many Victorian to hit the waterways. There were several water rescues along the state’s ocean beaches on Monday.
