Speaking to reporters on Monday, Assistant Police Commissioner Brian Connors said the tragedy was made more severe as the victims were known to members of the community and even first responders.

One victim was a nurse at the Maryborough hospital who had finished her shift in the evening.

The Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service posted on social media about the shock passing of one of its own.

“The Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service team was absolutely devastated to learn of the death of a respected Maryborough Hospital staff member in a tragic road crash over the weekend,” the post read.

“Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and loved ones, as well as the first responders who have been affected.

“We understand what an enormous impact this loss will have on our tight-knit Wide Bay HHS community, and we encourage our staff and colleagues to seek support during this difficult time.”

Commissioner Connors said the critically-injured woman was related to the police family through local members in Hervey Bay.

“This is a challenging time for the community and a tragic set of circumstances,” Commissioner Connors said.

The circumstances of the alleged theft of the vehicle is under investigation.

Commissioner Connors said there was no pursuit at the time of the vehicle crashing.
