The teen’s dad told the court he could be “defiant” but had improved as he got older and the father had been in touch with services to help his son.

He also planned to line-up full time work to help the teen, who was not in school.

Mr Smith’s mum, Michelle Smith, fought back tears as she told reporters outside court he was supposed to come over for dinner on Wednesday night.

“He texted me yesterday, he was meant to come for tea tonight,” she said.

Mr Smith’s dad, Mike, fought back tears as he told 3AW’s Neil Mitchell on Thursday his son was getting something to eat with his girlfriend when a group of three men and a woman started abusing her.
