A 57-year-old Sydney man, who police allege tried to murder his wife, has made no application for bail in a brief appearance in a local court on Tuesday.
Nazar Younan was arrested and charged after police and emergency services arrived at a property in Fairfield just after 7.30am on Monday, following reports of a domestic violence-related stabbing.
On arrival, police said they were told a woman, 54, had been rushed to hospital with a “serious laceration” to her throat, while a subsequent forensic examination of the property resulted in the seizure of a large knife.
Police said the woman underwent surgery and remains in Liverpool Hospital in a serious condition.
Mr Younan was arrested at the scene and taken to Fairfield Police Station.
At the Parramatta Local Court on Tuesday, an order was made for Mr Younan to be examined by two medical practitioners, one being a psychiatrist, and if found to be mentally ill, he is then to be transferred to a hospital.
The matter will return to court for a committal on January 16.
