A man has been charged after a 90-year-old nursing home resident was allegedly raped in her bed at an aged care facility.
Police allege Shane Huici, 23, of St Albans Park, managed to break into Tannoch Brae Aged Care about 4.45am on Sunday.
Sexual crimes squad Detective Acting Inspector Mark Burnett alleged the woman woke to find the man sexually assaulting her at the Geelong aged care centre before she courageously fought back against her attacker.
He said she was able to alert staff at the Aldershot Rd facility, who came to her aid and scared off the alleged attacker.
A manhunt involving the dog squad and a public appeal was launched on Sunday to track down the man and he was arrested just after 9am on Monday.
He has been charged with rape, aggravated burglary, recklessly cause serious injury, common law assault and theft.
He was remanded on Monday night and will next appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on November 5.
Inspector Burnett said the woman suffered some injuries and her medical care was ongoing.
“She is impressive; she is very cognisant of what’s occurred and is a fighter,” he said.
“She was able at one point to activate her personal distress alarm.
“That’s resulted in nursing staff attending and scaring away … the alleged attacker.
“This is a particularly confronting incident. This female – one of the more vulnerable people within our society – has allegedly been attacked within her home.”
