The daughter of a man who was stabbed 11 times at a Melbourne caravan park just hours before Father’s Day has started a fundraiser to help give him a “proper send off”.
Police said Chris Lyons was found with life-threatening stab wounds and died at the scene of the Shawlands caravan park in Dandenong South about 10pm on September 4.
A 21-year-old man and a 32-year old woman, believed to be the deceased’s son and partner, were also taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Jeremy Newell, 25, was charged with murder and appeared briefly in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday, where his lawyer Allie Sutherland said his client had a significant intellectual disability.
“We request he be seen by a custody nurse for medical and psychological matters,” she said.
The deceased’s daughter Maddy Lyons has started a GoFundMe fundraiser, saying the tragedy left their family “absolutely lost”.
About $3156 had been raised as of Thursday afternoon, with a goal of $6000 set.
“I am not one to ever ask for money but we are absolutely desperate for any help, as you can imagine we are already experiencing enough mental strain without having the price of everything weighing over us,” she said.
“We are beyond grateful for any help that we can get to help us get him the proper send off and actually get the chance to say goodbye.”
In court, Mr Newell repeatedly put his head in his hands, stood up and down and stared into the camera, rocked backwards and forwards, and appeared at some points to be crying and retching.
“My family and I cannot afford this memorial on our own,” Ms Lyons said.
“My brother, also at the scene the night it happened, was stabbed and required surgery.
“Along with his three months hand therapy and the psychological trauma of watching his father [die] is going to cost a decent amount of money for him to even begin to cope.
“My main goal is to raise enough money to at least help with the costs of my Dad’s memorial, including the cost to have both his pensioner parents attend the memorial from Tasmania.”
