Collingwood star Jordan De Goey looks set to miss the rest of the 2020 home-and-away season after surgery to repair the flexor tendon in his finger.

De Goey went under the knife just 12 hours after a best-on-ground, five-goal performance against Geelong in Round 7.

Magpies football boss Geoff Walsh revealed on Thursday afternoon that De Goey‘s recovery time would be much longer than first anticipated and that he won’t be back in the team for “at least a couple of months.”

“He had surgery the morning after the game (and) was discharged from hospital over here in Perth the same day,” Walsh said.

”It looked fairly innocuous but they are serious injuries, the flexor tendon. It will be a couple of months I think before we see Jordy back in action.

“It will be a fair while unfortunately.”

DeGoey, 24, is out of contract at season’s end and is currently in negotiations with the club, without a manager, using his father to assist him in talks.

His next contract should make him the highest paid player at the Magpies, but he also has a police change hanging over his head.

DeGoey’s injury is the latest setback for the Pies who are already without star defender Jeremy Howe (knee) for the season, while Steele Sidebottom still has one match remaining of a four-game suspension for breaching COVID-19 protocol.

“We’ve had some significant and unfortunate injuries,” Walsh said.

Travis Varcoe could also miss Sunday’s clash with West Coast who has a rib injury.

Howe, who was sidelined last month after rupturing his posterior cruciate ligament and also damaging his medial ligament, is quarantining and waiting for the team in Queensland.

Will Kelly, who suffered a serious injury to his elbow on debut earlier in July, will head to Queensland soon, too, to do his rehab, though Walsh said it was unlikely the youngster would play again this year.
