NSW records 89 new local COVID cases, 21 infectious in the community

New South Wales has recorded a second Covid-19 death and 89 new locally acquired cases, premier Gladys Berejiklian has revealed.

A man in his 70s from Sydney's eastern suburbs died on Monday and was a confirmed case of COVID-19 however no further details could be revealed.

It came after a woman in her 90s on Sunday.

“I extend my sympathies to that gentleman’s family,” NSW chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant said.

“Obviously at this time, our condolences go to the family before releasing any information about the case.

“I would prefer to get clearance from the family; it is a difficult time and that is the respectful thing to do.

“I can just reinforce that for anyone over 60, there should be no reason why you do not pick up the phone and get an appointment for your (vaccination) dose.”

Of the 89 cases, 64 are from southwest Sydney, 15 are from southeast Sydney, five are from inner Sydney, three are from western Sydney, one is from northern Sydney and one is from the Nepean/Blue Mountains area.

Ms Berejiklian said three quarters of the positive tests were close contacts of existing cases.

She said 75 were linked to a known case or cluster – 59 are household contacts and 16 are close contacts.

However, 14 cases remain under investigation as to the origin of their infections.

There were 55 cases in isolation throughout their infectious period and nine cases in isolation for part of their infectious period.

Concerningly, there were at least 21 cases infectious in the community with four more yet to be determined for their isolation status.

There are now 65 Covid-19 cases in hospital, with 21 people in intensive care and four requiring ventilation.

“I can confirm that there are patients in ICU, and young patients for that matter, who have no underlying health conditions and are in ICU,” Dr Chant said.

Sydney’s total Covid-19 outbreak has now grown to 767 since June 16 when the first case was reported.

Ms Berejiklian urged Sydneysiders to continue following the restrictions but did not acknowledge when the lockdown would end, although she had said previously there was little chance it would be repealed by Saturday.

“I am hoping to make an announcement today or Thursday at the latest in relation to the future of the lock down,” she said.

“We are in this together; in the next few days we want to see those numbers go in the same direction,” Ms Berejiklian added, referring to the 112 cases registered on Monday.

“One day is not a trend. The numbers will keep bouncing around and we have to say that.

“But I do want everyone to know that our efforts will make a difference (and) allow us to leave the lockdown in a timely way.”
