A SYDNEY student accused of the honour killing of his mother's lover has been found guilty of murder.

Andrew Iskandar, 21, had denied murdering Mohd Shah Saemin, 43, outside his flat at Leichhardt, in Sydney's inner west, at about midnight on February 21, 2010.

He told the New South Wales Supreme Court jury he used a hammer in self-defence after Mr Saemin attacked him and his father.

He denied planning the killing or knowing beforehand about his mother's affair with Mr Saemin.

The crown alleged the "honour killing" was planned after the affair became a talking point among Sydney's Indonesian community.

After a week of deliberations, the jury delivered its verdict today.

The jury found Iskandar not guilty of soliciting an inmate to murder a crown witness to whom he allegedly confessed.

His mother, Nita Iskandar, 47, was also on trial and pleaded not guilty to being an accessory after the fact by helping her son leave the country following Mr Saemin's death.

The jury is continuing to deliberate on her charge.
