Melbourne teenager Shaun Wilson-Miller allegedly waited 17 hours for help in the Royal Children's Hospital

UPDATE: BRAVE teen Shaun Wilson-Miller was forced to wait 17 hours in a hospital emergency department last week as his heart was failing, it has been alleged.

The sensational claims were aired by radio host Derryn Hinch on 3AW this afternoon after the 17-year-old lost his long battle with heart disease on Saturday.

Hinch told the show Shaun was admitted to hospital after a radio journalist called the Royal Children's Hospital media department on the family's behalf to inquire about the lengthy wait.

''Within 10 minutes of (3AW) producer Seb Costello contacting them, he got a call back saying 'Good news, we've got a bed for Shaun','' Hinch said.

Hinch told listeners that Shaun's father Cameron Miller had told him: ''It's the first time they have got it wrong. They were wonderful to Shaun for 17 years''.

He said a friend of the family, who had contacted the station with her concerns, believed if Shaun had been admitted earlier he might not have died so soon.

He told the show the friend had said in an email: ''Myself and others also think that if Shaun had been admitted sooner, he could have had his operation to drain the two litres of fluid out of his lungs, and he maybe he would be here a little longer to go to his Luna Park party.''

The teen was suffering chronic heart rejection after two transplants, and won hearts internationally with an emotional goodbye video on YouTube.

Hinch also aired claims that Shaun was not taking his anti-rejection medication correctly.

The family could not be contacted this afternoon.

Shaun died on Saturday clasping his dad's hand after a long battle with heart disease.

But his legacy will live on. Memoirs of his remarkable life and courage will be released in September.

His grieving dad Cameron said his son was strong until the end and treated every moment as precious.

"He kept hugging me every chance he got and telling me how much he loved me and would miss me," he said.

"It's very traumatic, it's tough. I'm numb at the moment, it still hasn't registered with me.

"He passed peacefully with me holding his hand. That is something the family will hold with us."

Sadly, death came sooner than expected. His family had hoped he still had weeks, if not months, to live.

He won't make his dream trip to Disneyland donated by strangers, his book launch, or the fundraising party in his honour at Luna Park next month.

But his family is taking comfort in the dreams he fulfilled in his dying months, and the huge impact he had on others.

More than 1.5 million people watched his YouTube video urging people to live life to the fullest after he was told by doctors his second heart transplant was failing and tributes have flooded in from around the world.

Mr Miller said their final moments together were typical - watching TV together, and Shaun being cheeky.

Writer Graeme Brosnan said one of the main themes of the book he was penning would be Shaun's positive outlook.

"One of the things he always said when I interviewed him was, live like there's no tomorrow - he wanted others to live like that,'' he said.

"He was so passionate about helping others, always positive.

"He had said to his father - `You have to live your life now, you've sacrificed your life for me'.''

Despite his own suffering, Shaun was helping a stranger in America via email cope with the death of her son from heart problems.

Tributes are flowing in from around the world including his beloved Bombers and Premier Ted Baillieu.
