‘Can’t be f***ed’: Why Succession star Sarah Snook is keeping it real in Hollywood

Succession star Sarah Snook is making waves in Hollywood on her own terms – and married the love of her life in lockdown.

Succession’s Sarah Snook takes Vogue’s Hardest Quiz

She’s been nominated for an Emmy and stars in a hit TV series but Sarah Snook is keeping it real in Hollywood.

The Australian actor – who plays ambitious media heiress Siobhan “Shiv” Roy in US drama Succession – has called out the industry’s “unrealistic beauty standard”.

“I mean, every time you get a role, you’re like: ‘Oh, this one’s the one. I’m going to really work out and get fit and look like the movie star I would hope to become or have a career doing,’” Snook told Vogue Australia’s upcoming November issue.

“And every time, I’m like: ‘Can I really be f***ed subscribing to an unrealistic beauty standard that then perpetuates and makes more women unhappy because they feel like they can’t attain something that’s not actually realistic anyway?’”

Speaking to Vogue, Adelaide-born Snook, 33, revealed she married Australian comedian Dave Lawson in February after a whirlwind engagement – they had been friends for six years before dating, and it was Snook who proposed.

“At the beginning of the pandemic last year, I got locked down in Melbourne with one of my best mates and we fell in love,” Snook told Vogue, of their romance.

“We’ve been friends since 2014, lived together, travelled together, always excited to see each other, but totally platonic. We’ve just never been single at the same time. I proposed and we got married in February in my backyard.”

On her wedding day, the bride wore a pair of “Blunnies” and a Chloe coat.

“It’s been a ride. There’s so much heartache and sadness in the world, but on a micro personal level, I’ve been very fortunate. There’s a really lovely grace in that without the pandemic, we might not have ended up together so quickly.”

Last year, Snook missed the Emmys – where she was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series – because of Australia’s international borders were closed. Instead, she watched the ceremony from her home in Melbourne, where Lawson made her an Emmy … out of tinfoil.

“People were upset on my behalf,” she said, of missing the awards show. “I’m like, ‘It’s fine!’”

To say that Snook isn’t letting Hollywood – and her breakthrough role in Succession – go to her head is an understatement.

“I always feel like I’ve played by choice and good fortune, interesting, complex, strong and a good diversity of women, in terms of their characters,” Snook told Vogue.

“They often have a strength and they’re not pushovers, but there’s usually been a redeeming softness that they’re protecting. And Shiv has that as well, but her defence of that softness is so different from who I am as a person.

“I have no idea what it is like to be a billionaire, other than through research. Whereas, I’m on this farm with Dave in nature and I’m like, ‘Woo hoo.’”

The November issue of Vogue Australia is out on October 25. The third season of Succession premieres at 12pm AEDT on Foxtel on Monday.
