Southport’s homelessness crisis rages on

Southport’s homelessness problem rages on, with Scarborough St now dubbed "Skid Row”.Crude tarp shelters, trolleys and bags of rubbish litter the CBD streets as those living rough band together in  micro communities, forming  a stark picture of the city's housing crisis.

Community frustration over the issue has reached boiling point, with traders and residents saying political leaders are making no headway on a solution.

Harry Lee, owner of Nerang St restaurant Duckie Duckie, is preparing to “shut shop with no plans to reopen”. Rising homeless numbers are a contributing to his decision.

Another business owner said he was tired of the “urinating, defecating and sleeping” in the entry way to his kebab shop.

Southport resident Tina Grice, who has lived in the area for four years, said the problem was the worst she'd seen.

Councillor Brooke Patterson said the council was taking measures but the shortage of public housing in the area was “not helping... and is a responsibility of the state”.

A spokesperson from the state government said it had allocated $10.26m to charities across the Coast as part of its $16m homelessness response plan.

Jackson Hills, from Q Shelter said there was a dire need for additional accommodation, ideally the Common Ground model that's “proven” across the country and overseas.

Ideally this would be in an area with the greatest need and would deliver an outcome for close to 200 people in supportive-style accommodation with wraparound services.
