SHARK ATTACKS

New defences deployed in wake of fatal attacks off Gold Coast and Tweed

Fifteen smart drumlines will be deployed off northern NSW's beaches ahead of the summer holiday season in the wake of  a spate of fatal shark attacks.

In the last 18 months, surfer Rob Pedretti (right) was fatally mauled by a shark at South Kingscliff while surfer Nick Slater, (left) died after being attacked at Greenmount Beach.

More recently, 31-year-old Timothy Thompson was fatally mauled by a great white shark while surfing at Shelly Beach near Coffs Harbour in September.

Tweed MP Geoff Provest said the drumlines had been trialled in NSW since 2015, with studies showing they had reduced attacks by more than 90 per cent.

What we’ve seen is that after the sharks are released it’s months before they’re back again... And you don’t have the problem of killing other species as you do with nets.

SMART drumlines allow target sharks to be intercepted beyond the surf break. Target sharks are White, Bull and Tiger, the species mainly involved in bites in NSW.

Once caught in the baited drumlines, sharks are tagged and released within 30 minutes approximately 1km offshore.

The drumlines will be deployed daily at beaches off Tweed down the coast to Hastings Point, Mr Provest said. They are not left out overnight.

The trial is part of a $21.4 million NSW Government program which has seen more drones deployed to watch for sharks and a listening station at Kingscliff.

Mr Provest said swimmers and surfers should still exercise caution and use the NSW SharkSmart app, which alerts users to shark activity.
