Gold Coast’sbold capsule hotel plan

By Andrew Potts

A developer wants to build a Japanese-style capsule hotel on the Gold Coast where a night’s stay will cost you less than a chicken parmy.

Does $20 a night sound alright?

IGR Property Group has filed plans with the Gold Coast City Council for Capsuleaccom.com, a 173-bed Japanese-style dormitory accommodation centre in the heart of Southport.

What's the plan?

If approved, the hotel planned for a historic Nerang St building next to Australia Fair, will be the cheapest accommodation on the Gold Coast.

At $20 a night, primarily travellers and backpackers.

Who will it cater to?

It will also allow guests to stay for longer – as long as they don’t mind their personal space being just 0.97m wide.

Guests will get access to an encased bunk bed equipped  with a reading light and power outlet, as well as a curtain for privacy.A pair of drawers will sit under each bed.

What do you get for $20?

Plans show the 1105sq m building will have a nook-style cafe fronting Nerang St, which will be open to both patrons and the public.

What about amenities?

There will also be a dining room and kitchen, outdoor entertainment and barbecue area and male, female and unisex bathrooms.

The developers say with events like the 2032 Olympic Games and a surge of 300,000 migrant workers arriving on our shores, the Gold Coast will be facing a shortage of low cost accommodation.

Is it needed?

While capsules are not ideal for claustrophobics, they are a cheap, affordable and central option for a city stay.

Cheap, central, small

The hotels originated in Japan in the late 1970s and have spread across the world. Several operate in Australia.

The development application is the latest in a series of dramatic shifts in the Nerang St area in the past six months including a multi-million facelift for Australia Fair.

Sign of the times

The capsule plan already has support, including from Destination Gold Coast CEO Patricia O’Callaghan, who said it was a welcome development to support the visitor economy.
