Sanwalpreet Shergill ordered to pay $412 after damaging windscreen of Uber car

A student has ended up with a hefty bill after calling an Uber to pick him up at Surfers Paradise.

What are your options when it comes to ride-sharing?

A UNIVERSITY student slapped the windscreen on his Uber so hard it cracked the glass on the Audi.

But Sanwalpreet Shergill claims he hit the windscreen because the car had grazed his leg when pulling up in Surfers Paradise.

Shergill, 23, pleaded guilty in the Southport Magistrates Court to one count of wilful damage.

Prosecutor Donn Reid told the court CCTV showed Shergill acting in an aggressive manner moments before the windscreen was slapped about 2.50am on Australia Day this year.

Defence lawyer Dan Rawlings, of Rawlings Criminal Law, said the Indian national had been grazed on the leg when the Uber was pulling up to collect him.

“He was standing on the side of the road and the Uber driver has swung in hitting his leg with the tyre,” he said.

Mr Rawlings said the incident left a “significant” scar.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair ordered Shergill pay $412 in compensation to get the windscreen fixed.

He also placed Shergill on a $400 good behaviour bond for six months.

No conviction was recorded.
