The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

A GOLD Coast man who drove at two police officers when they busted him trying to steal a car has previously been jailed for an horrific hit and run in Tallai.

Mina Hanna was also not supposed to be behind the wheel after his licence was stripped during the hit and run.

Hanna, 24, pleaded guilty in the Southport Magistrates Court today to multiple charges including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and driving while disqualified.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Lewis Butterfield told the court the owner woke on March 4 to hear their car starting outside their Worongary home and called police.

When police arrived they tried to stop Hanna but he manoeuvred in the driveway and drove straight at them.

Police chased Hanna to Gaven where he stopped the car and fled on foot before they caught up with him.

Magistrate Pamela Dowse sentenced him to 18 months prison and banned him from driving for four and a half years.

“I’m at a loss really to know what to say to you,” she said.

“You have been in court for these exact offences more than once.

“Do yourself a favour, do your mother a favour and start following the rules.”

Hanna will be eligible for parole on July 16.

The court was told Hanna was jailed for six and half years in 2017 for a hit and run at Tallai in May 2016.

Hanna stole $100 from Andrew Mavridis and drove off while Mr Mavridis clutched the driver’s side window in an attempt to get his cash back.

Mr Mavridis was left with severe injuries and confined to a wheelchair.

Defence lawyer Lisa Searing, of Allen & Searing Criminal Lawyers, said Hanna was in the process of trying to get his licence back when he stole the car in Worongary in March.

Ms Searing said Hanna was born in Egypt and struggled in school when he moved to Australia.
