Mark Atta-Singh: Alleged Lone Wolf bikie accused of involvement in kidnapping of Caroll Dufailly and Eduardus Groenewegen

AN accused Lone Wolf bikie allegedly linked to the kidnapping of a Belgian model and businessman has been granted bail.

Mark Atta-Singh, 41, of Helensvale, appeared in Southport Magistrates Court charged with 16 offences including armed robbery, assault, extortion and kidnapping.

But his solicitor Jason Jacobson, of Jacobson Mahony Lawyers, said the case against Atta-Singh was “speculative”. Outside court, he said his client would defend the charges.

The charges relate to the assault and kidnappings of Belgian model Caroll Dufailly and her partner, businessman Eduardus Groenewegen, who runs events company Benassi Event Solutions, on October 25 last year.

The court heard it was believed that Atta-Singh might have been involved, or was allegedly involved in the offence from the likely possession of a phone.

Further, he had “similar characteristics” to someone appearing in CCTV footage.

Atta-Singh was granted bail and must reside at his Helensvale property, abide by a curfew and report to police twice a week.

Mr Jacobson conceded the charges were serious but said it would be unjustified to keep Atta-Singh behind bars.

He said a 16-page affidavit – which mentions extensive information about the identification of “some individuals”, five vehicles of interest, CCTV footage, an eye witness description of two offenders and a person linked to cloning number plates and the QPS logo – only made mention of an investigation into a telephone related to Atta-Singh.

“Through all of that, there is no connection of any description to my client through any of those persons, or items of interest at any relevant time, or at all,” he said.

“The telephone investigation is what the police rely upon in respect to Mr Atta-Singh and that’s what is spoken about.

“It says that he has a mobile telephone service subscribed in his own name at an address over the border.”

Mr Jacobson said the document said Atta-Singh’s phone remained in NSW at the time of the offence.

“The allegation made against my client is a belief … that it was highly likely in the officer’s opinion that another mobile telephone was in possession … at the time of the offences in the locality,” he said.

He said there were a number of cipher phones mentioned, none that were linked to his client.

“Other than to say that there’s a belief that earlier in time, it is said that it is believed that one of these phones was with him,” he said.

The matter was adjourned to Ipswich Magistrates Court on August 5.

Outside of court, Mr Jacobson said his client would be defending the charges.
