FOUR people chased down and tackled a man in Broadbeach this afternoon, holding him until police arrived after a dramatic series of events sparked when a car crashed into a tram.
Police allege that shortly before 2pm a white BMW, which was stolen today from the Woodridge area of Logan, collided with a tram travelling south on the Gold Coast Highway.
It’s alleged a male driver and female passenger of the stolen BMW fled on foot, heading in an easterly direction towards St Kilda Ave.
A 27-year-old woman standing next to her vehicle at the intersection of the Gold Coast Highway and St Kilda Ave was allegedly threatened by the man, who demanded to be driven away from the scene.
When the woman refused, police allege the man became violent, grabbing her by the wrist and pulling her arm behind her back before taking a gel blaster from his bag.
Members of the public came to the woman’s aid and the man ran from the scene.
He was chased by four people who managed to grab hold of him on the Gold Coast Highway and keep him there until police arrived a short time later. A 40-year-old man was allegedly punched during the struggle.
One of the four good Samaritans, Joel Pierce, told Nine News they held the man down until police arrived.
“I just jumped around his neck and brought him to the ground,” Mr Pierce said.
“Two other guys came and held him down with me until the cops came.”
