Gold Coast father Jesse James Aguis charged after ‘threatening cop with shotgun’ over suspected crime spree

A Gold Coast man allegedly pulled a sawn-off shotgun on an off-duty police officer after being approached over a suspected crime spree across the state’s southeast.

A SURFERS Paradise man allegedly pulled a sawn-off shotgun on a Gold Coast off-duty police officer after being approached over a suspected crime spree across the state’s southeast.

Jesse James Aguis, 23, sent Queensland police on high alert early on Christmas Eve after the shocking incident at a Southport service station, where the cop approached the man after he recognised the car he was travelling in as a vehicle of interest.

A Gold Coast plain clothes officer was filling his own car up with petrol on his way to work when he saw Aguis and another man in the suspected stolen grey Lexus, believed to have been used in a series of alleged theft and evade offences across Moreton, Caboolture, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

When the officer tried to speak with Aguis, who was standing outside the vehicle, and the pair got into a scuffle about 5.40am.

Aguis allegedly ran back to the car and got in the back seat.

When the detective approached the driver’s side door and tried to stop the car from leaving, police say the man shoved the firearm in the police officer’s face before the driver of the vehicle sped off.

The off-duty police officer was not injured during the incident.

On December 26, police raided a Woodridge property and arrested Aguis.

He was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, serious assault police officer, dangerous conduct with a weapon and unlawful possession of a weapon over the Christmas Eve incident.

The Gold Coast father has also been charged with entering a premises to commit an indictable offence and fraud.

Aguis appeared in the Southport Magistrates Court on December 28 and was remanded in custody to appear in court again next year.

On December 27, a 22-year-old Bellmere man alleged to be the driver of the vehicle — Cody Robert Ross — was arrested in Caboolture.

He was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, serious assault police officer, unlawful possession of a weapon, dangerous operation of a vehicle and disqualified driving in relation to the December 24 incident involving the off-duty cop.

The man appeared in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on December 28.

He was also charged with several unrelated offences including entering a premises and committing an indictable offence, burglary, receiving tainted property and possessing dangerous drugs.

Ross was also remanded in custody and is expected to appear in the Caboolture Magistrates Court in January.
