A Gold Coast man was captured on police bodycam footage fleeing from officers through the heart of Surfers Paradise. Read what happened when he faced court.

A Gold Coast man who led police on a foot chase through the heart of Surfers Paradise has been fined and banned from the city’s night-life precincts for a year.

Christopher Joseph Moemua Ioane was captured on bodyworn camera footage fleeing from police after a disturbance near the Cavill Ave tram stop in the early hours of April 25.

Video released by police shows the 21-year-old darting along footpaths and briefly onto the road before officers catch up and put him in handcuffs.

Ioane pleaded guilty in Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday to one count each of obstructing police and committing a public nuisance.

Police prosecutions offered no evidence to a previous charge of assault occasioning bodily harm, relating to the moments before Ioane’s sprint from officers.

The Upper Coomera man was fined $1578, and must serve several days’ jail in default if not paid within nine months. No conviction was recorded.

The court also ordered that Ioane be banned from licensed premises within the Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach safe night precincts until October 30 next year, or the order is otherwise amended or revoked.
