A BELOVED family dog who miraculously escaped a raging house fire on the Gold Coast is on the road to recovery.

The Follan family lost their Varsity Lakes home last Sunday when an electrical fault sparked a ferocious blaze that saw neighbours evacuate and emergency services rush to the scene.

Sadly, the Majorca Crescent home was completely destroyed by the fire after the roof caved in.

But in a glimmer of hope - their dog Bindi made it out alive.

The German Shepherd Cross was inside when the house burst into flames and concerned neighbours rushed to the backyard in a frantic attempt to save her.

They smashed a number of glass doors and windows but said the smoke was too intense to see the pet.

It was only a short time later she was discovered cowering in the backyard - traumatised, afraid and badly injured.

According to the vet, Bindi suffered burns to her head, legs and paws, had a badly swollen leg and had significant smoke inhalation of the lungs.

Andrew Follan said two-and-a-half-year-old Bindi was a “strong little dog” and she was “making strides” in her recovery.

“Only time will tell how long it will take for her to get back to her normal self but she’s doing great,” Mr Follan said.

“We know that her superficial wounds are on the mend but we are still concerned about the damage to her lungs. It’s still too early to know if the damage will be permanent.”

Mr Follan said Bindi had also suffered “mental trauma” after the incident and that even the slightest sound from a mobile phone would upset her.

“She’s getting better every day though and all we can do is hope for the best.

“It’s sad for the kids mostly as they are so used to rumbling with her and taking her for big walks on the beach every day.”

Mr Follan thanked the community for their “overwhelming support” since the fire, and said not only neighbours but the wider Robina and Varsity Lakes community had been “amazing” in helping the family get back on track.

Neighbours have since set up a GoFundMe page for the family, which has amassed over $20,000 out of its $100,000 target.
