Plans to advance the case of a woman allegedly responsible for a horrific triple-fatal crash in the Gold Coast hinterland have stalled amid “concerns” for the accused.
Uiatu “Joan” Taufua remains in custody at Brisbane Womens Correctional Centre, more than nine months after being charged with causing the fiery collision at Bonogin on December 30.
It is alleged Ms Taufua fled from a police car minutes before crashing into an oncoming car on Bonogin Rd.
She was the only survivor with all three of the other car’s occupants – Chris Fawcett, his partner Susan Zimmer, and her daughter Steffanie Zimmer – all dying at the scene.
Ms Taufua faces three charges of manslaughter and one each of dangerous operation of a vehicle, evading police, unlicensed driving, and mid-range drink driving.
She was not required to appear when her case was mentioned in Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday.
Defence barrister Elliot Boddice said his instructing solicitors in Sydney had “raised concerns” about Ms Taufua and were needing an expert report before finalising committal instructions.
Mr Boddice said the required doctor was expected to return from leave this week, but did not yet have an estimated completion date for the report.
Ms Taufua was remanded in custody, with her case to next be mentioned on December 21.
She has not yet made an application for bail.
