Terrifying footage has emerged of the moment an out-of-control stolen car driven by teenagers slams into another vehicle at high speed on the Gold Coast.
A 17-year-old boy remains in ICU after his car was hit by the stolen Mazda CX3 about 12.30am on Thursday at an intersection near Frank Street in Labrador.
In CCTV captured of the crash, the loud screeching of tyres from the Mazda can be heard as the driver appears to try and slow the car.
It slams into the other vehicle at speed.
The force sends both cars airborne, before the road is covered by a plume of smoke.
Emergency services arrived at the crash site within minutes of the chaos according to Queensland Ambulance Service Supervisor John Nolan.
“Initially on arrival two patients were located on the scene and it was reported two patients had absconded,” Mr Nolan said.
“It’s believed that speed was involved. One vehicle at high speed has T-boned with a secondary vehicle.”
The 17-year-old male driver sustained significant chest and pelvic injuries and was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
A 15-year-old boy who is understood to have been a passenger was also transported in a serious condition.
Mr Nolan said more ambulance crews were diverted to another address after a 17-year-old boy and 14-year-old girl were tracked by the dog squad to a street 250 metres from the crash scene.
“It’s just a very lucky circumstance that nobody was more seriously injured, or potentially fatally,” Mr Nolan said.
It’s understood the 17-year-old boy and 14-year-old girl were also taken to hospital with injuries.
The boy remains in custody with no charges laid. The girl has been released without charge.
It is understood all four youths involved in the horror smash were known to police.
The alleged driver of the car which caused the crash has a history of minor encounters with the law, while his alleged passenger had a more significant criminal history.
The two occupants of the other vehicle had also come to police attention for minor matters.
Mr Nolan said the incident was draining on emergency services and their resources.
“These types of incident are very serious and significant especially when there are people of this age involved.”
“We had four advanced care paramedic units, a high acuity response unit, critical care paramedics and the operational supervisors.”
A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the stolen vehicle was taken from a property on Wharf Road, Surfers Paradise about half an hour before the serious crash.
Police inquiries are continuing.
