Two tourists from New Zealand got a terrifying welcome to the Gold Coast when a car allegedly driven by a driver three times over the limit smashed into their vehicle in Surfers Paradise.
The couple were driving along the Gold Coast Highway near Macintosh Island at about 10pm on Friday when a black Nissan Navara allegedly slammed into them while attempting to overtake another vehicle.
Police allege the female driver of the Navara fled the scene, attempting to hide on Macintosh Island.
However she was soon located and arrested and allegedly later blew 0.163 – more than three time the 0.05 breath alcohol concentration limit.
A 37-year-old Eagleby woman has since been charged with drink driving, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and driving without a licence.
She was expected to appear before Beenleigh Magistrates Court on July 12.
Acting Superintendent Scott Knowles said members of the public and council cameras had assisted police in catching up with the alleged driver.
“Witnesses allege that a black Navara was being driven dangerously, weaving in and out of traffic, and as a result it actually crossed to the incorrect side of the road and was involved in a head on incident with another vehicle,” he said.
“The female driver of that vehicle then allegedly fled, with witnesses taking a photograph of her and giving directions to police as to the last direction she went.
“Thankfully the Gold Coast city camera safe network assisted us in tracking that person down and she was located attempting to hide on Macintosh Island.”
Acting Supt Knowles said it had been a shocking incident for the tourists caught up in the crash.
“There was a couple in that vehicle. They were having a holiday on the Gold Coast,” he said. “Unfortunately they were involved in this traffic incident as a result of the alleged behaviour of this lady.”
Nobody was injured in the incident.
