Surfers Paradise alleged stabbing: What police say happened in hours leading up to incident

The second man charged after a stabbing in the heart of Surfers Paradise has been named in court, as fresh details about the alleged hours leading up to it are revealed.

A 20-year-old man was undergoing surgery on Monday after being allegedly stabbed in the back in the heart of Surfers Paradise.

The Palm Beach man suffered significant blood loss after the incident on Orchid Ave at about 2.30am on Sunday.

He was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital where he was placed in an induced coma and underwent surgery on Sunday.

The Bulletin understands that the man’s family, including his mother and father, are at the hospital to support him and he was due to undergo further surgery at the hospital on Monday, where he remains in the intensive care unit.

Police will allege that the man was stabbed after getting into an argument with another man and a woman outside a barber shop on Orchid Ave.

It is believed the injured man had interacted with the woman at a Surfers Paradise nightclub earlier that evening.

During the argument on Orchid Ave a third man then allegedly got out of a black Holden Commodore that was parked nearby and stabbed the injured man in the back.

The injured man has since undergone surgery at Gold Coast University Hospital.

Police said the weapon used was a large silver knife resembling a kitchen knife, with a 210mm blade and a 10cm handle.

“We understand that the victim and a female may have had some interaction earlier in the night together which has led to this altercation occurring,” Acting Superintendent Mark Mooney said.

“I believe they had spoken in a nightclub. I don’t know what was said, or what occurred in the nightclub. But I believe there was some kind of conversation that occurred within the nightclub.”

Following the alleged stabbing police say the Commodore left the scene, but was abandoned at 3.10am near Precision Dr and Riechert Dr in Molendinar after ploughing through a garden and crashing into a parked vehicle.

It is believed as many as five people were in the vehicle at the time. Three of them, all men, were taken into custody by police a short time later.

Of those three men, a 19-year-old Collingwood Park man and a 17-year-old Redbank Plains boy were released without charge after assisting police with their inquiries.

A 21-year-old Victorian man, Manyang Manyang, was charged with acts intended to maim and committing public nuisance.

Southport Magistrates Court was told during his bail application on Monday that Mr Manyang was allegedly in a fight with the victim and had him in a headlock when another man approached from behind and stabbed him.

Prosecutor Jacinta Raven said there was footage of the incident and that Mr Manyang allegedly later helped the other person clean the weapon.

Duty lawyer Jacklyn Lynch said Mr Manyang had been planning to stay in Queensland for several months if his brother’s construction company secured a contract, and had the option to stay or return to Victoria.

Ms Lynch said her client had no criminal history and no passport, meaning he would be unable to return to South Sudan with his brother.

Acting Magistrate Sarah Thompson granted Mr Manyang’s bail, saying the case against him on the most serious charge was “exceptionally weak” and that there was no evidence he would fail to appear at court as required.

“It may well be that the person ... was acting without any encouragement or the other features under (the relevant act) that would make you a party to his acts,” Ms Thompson said.

Mr Manyang’s bail includes a condition that he have no contact with the alleged victim.

His case will return to court on August 8.

On Monday morning police arrested Ngor Ngor, a 23-year-old man from Ipswich’s Augustine Heights, and charged him with acts intended to maim and unlicensed driving.

He appeared in Ipswich Magistrates Court for the first time on Tuesday, where it was heard his case was likely to proceed to a higher court and that it would be difficult to make an application for bail without a lawyer.

Mr Ngor was remanded in custody, with his case due to return to court on Wednesday.
