Gold Coast hooning antics

Police have warned drivers responsible for “reckless antics” in public places that they will come down hard on them after smashing a car meet in Burleigh.

Officers swooped after residents reported “tonnes of cars” had gathered at the Home & Life Centre on Reedy Creek Rd at about 7.40pm on Friday night.

It was also claimed that cars had been “drag racing” on the road outside.

The police action resulted in six men aged between 18 and 31 years old being issued fines and losing demerit points for offences including speeding, busting red lights, doing burnouts, driving a defective vehicle and not having proper control of a vehicle.

Two of the men were from Palm Beach, while the others were from Currumbin Waters, Helensvale, Logan and northern NSW.

A police spokesperson said dangerous driving “endangers lives and puts innocent members of the public at risk” and would not be tolerated.

“The QPS employs a range of covert and overt strategies, including the use of unmarked motorbikes, to patrol known hotspots and take enforcement action,” the spokesperson said.

“Our message to anyone taking part in high-risk activities on our roads or in public spaces is that police will continue to target and investigate dangerous acts and take action against those involved.

“Police and the community do not accept these reckless antics on our roads and anyone with any information to assist police in identifying those involved are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
