Siege in Nerang comes to an end as two wanted criminals arrested following lengthy standoff with Gold Coast police

A marathon standoff on the Gold Coast forced residents into their homes for almost 20 hours - but “comprehensive negotations” by police have finally paid off.

Gold Coast siege finally over

Police have finally arrested two wanted men who were holed up in a home on a Gold Coast street, bringing an end to a siege which stretched almost 20 hours.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman confirmed the arrests about 11.15am on Thursday.

They have since confirmed the men didn’t have a weapon when they were arrested, with officers in the process of searching the home.

Subsequently, police stated: “Following comprehensive negotiations overnight, a 25-year-old Tugun man and a 32-year-old Labrador man surrendered and were taken into custody at 11am today”.

“The Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) declaration was revoked at 11.15am.

“The two men have now been transported to the Southport Watchhouse.

“Police wish to thank the community for their patience and understanding during this incident.”

The standoff began just before 3pm on Wednesday after police tried to detain the men in relation to return to prison warrants.

Earlier, police confirmed one of the men at the centre of the ongoing siege at Nerang had cut off his GPS ankle monitor.

The two men were refusing to leave a Rimu Place property.

Regional crime co-ordinator Detective Acting Superintendent Chris Ahern said earlier this morning negotiations were ongoing.

He confirmed the two men did not have any hostages with them.

St Brigid’s Primary School, located just inside the cordoned off area, posted to social media earlier on Thursday morning warning parents the school was closed until further notice.

He said there was no direct threat to nearby residents and that the property where the men were staying was linked to associates of the pair.

“These two people we are interested in are wanted on warrants and we are attempting to take them into custody in accordance with those warrants,” he said.

“One of the people did have a bracelet and they have removed it in recent days.

“Obviously as we can see from today they are not interested in coming into contact with the police.”

He said any links between the men and two shooting incidents – at the Arundel Police Beat early Monday morning and at a family in Coolangatta late on Saturday afternoon – were still being investigated.

Police would not confirm if the men at the centre of the siege were armed.
