Police are hunting for a man who escaped their clutches after a wild cross border chase.

At about 2am on Saturday September 7 NSW Police attempted to stop a black Holden Commodore bearing false plates at Wommin Bay Rd in Chinderah.

The vehicle had previously been stolen in Nambour and had been linked by police to incidents in both Chinderah and Lismore, including alleged robbery and assault offences.

When the vehicle failed to stop as directed, officers initiated a pursuit, tracking the vehicle as it headed northbound on the M1 and across the border, where police on the Gold Coast took over.

After the car turned off the M1 at Palm Beach it was tracked to the car park at The Pines shopping centre in Elanora, where it was found abandoned.

The man and two women were travelling in a black Holden Commodore.

CCTV footage recovered from the centre showed a man and two women fleeing from the vehicle before police arrived.

Acting Superintendent Scott Knowles from Gold Coast police said officers were searching for the trio, with investigations now focused on the Nambour area from where the Commodore was originally stolen.

“(We) are attempting to locate the male person and females that were in that vehicle,” he said.

“Our investigations at the moment have moved towards the Nambour area where that vehicle was stolen from and those inquiries are ongoing.”

Acting Supt Knowles said police knew the identity of the man involved.

They suspected he may also have been involved in the theft of another vehicle as he worked to escape police.

“We know who the male person is and we’re currently seeking that person. The two females we’ve yet to identify,” he said.

“ ... There is some suggestion a vehicle was stolen from the Burleigh Heads area around that time, which we suspect might be this person.

“Police did attempt to intercept that vehicle. The driver of that vehicle into bushland. We weren’t able to capture him at that point in time.

“We suspect it’s the same person but we don’t have confirmation of that at this point in time.”
