Police vehicles have been rammed twice within just hours on the Gold Coast, resulting in an injury to one officer and damage to multiple squad cars.
A 14-year-old boy is facing serious charges over the second of the two unrelated incidents, which both involved stolen vehicles.
In the first case, police pulled over a white Toyota HiLux on the Gold Coast Highway at Mermaid Beach to conduct a breath test.
As officers approached the vehicle it was put into reverse, crashing into a police car and injuring a police officer in the elbow before taking off.
Police tracked the vehicle, which was bearing false plates, to Miami Surf Club where it was found abandoned.
It later transpired the HiLux had been stolen in Coffs Harbour on August 16.
Acting Superintendent Scott Knowles said police were appealing for anyone with dashcam footage of the vehicle to come forward.
“We’ve got investigations ongoing in terms of trying to identify who was in that vehicle and who was driving that vehicle,” he said.
“But we’re asking, if anyone has any dashcam footage or CCTV footage from around the Miami Surf Club we’d certainly appreciate you reaching out to us through Policelink or through your local police station and sharing that footage with us to assist us with our investigations.”
Six hours later police vehicles were again rammed in a separate incident – this time at Palm Beach.
Police tracked a Mitsubishi SUV stolen from a Carrara address that had been involved in an attempted robbery at Robina a short time earlier to a 7-Eleven service station in Palm Beach.
“A number of our police units attended there in an attempt to intercept the vehicle and prevent it from leaving,” Acting Supt Knowles said.
“Unfortunately the driver of the vehicle has put the vehicle into reverse and attempted to flee.
“Once he became aware he couldn’t escape he then tried to alight from the vehicle and flee on foot.
“Thankfully our police were a little bit more fleet of foot and managed to grab him.”
Three police vehicles were damaged in the incident.
A 14-year-old boy from Paradise Point was arrested and charged with unlicensed driving, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and possession of stolen property.
He was denied police bail over the weekend and was due to appear at the Children’s Court in Southport on Monday.
