A group of teenagers involved in a serious crash overnight - leaving one young man with life-threatening injuries - appeared intoxicated at the time, witnesses have claimed.

Residents of a Pimpama home said they were woken by a “big bang” when the group’s car mounted a roundabout and slammed into their retaining wall just before 1am on Sunday.

Gold Coast district officer chief superintendent Craig Hanlon said the man provided a positive roadside breath test.

“But due to his injuries we couldn’t put him on an analyse instrument so we have taken blood to ascertain if any drugs or alcohol was involved,” he said.

The residents claimed the car’s occupants seemed intoxicated - citing bottles of alcohol found on the road nearby - and threatened them when they started taking photographs for any future insurance claim.

Photographs from the scene show extensive damage to the front end of the crashed Holden Commodore.

A 19-year-old Pimpama man, who was a passenger in the car, was treated at the scene before being transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition with life-threatening head injuries.

Another passenger, a 20-year-old woman from Western Australia, was also transported to the Hospital with suspected spinal injuries.

The driver, an 18-year-old man from Coomera, was also taken to the University Hospital for assessment. He was assisting police with their investigations, a spokesman said.

Two other passengers, an 18-year-old woman from Ormeau and 19-year-old man from Coomera, had been assessed by paramedics.

“Witnesses or anyone with information, including dashcam footage of the vehicle, is urged to contact police,” a police spokesman said.
